The Claim: "Michael Jackson converted to Islam before he died, but is still alive living secretly in Bahrain under a new identity"

Introduction

The claim suggests that Michael Jackson, the iconic pop star, not only converted to Islam shortly before his death in 2009 but is also alive and living under a new identity in Bahrain. This assertion combines elements of Jackson's religious beliefs with conspiracy theories about his death, prompting a closer examination of the available evidence and sources.

What We Know

  1. Conversion to Islam: Reports indicate that Michael Jackson's brother, Jermaine Jackson, announced in early 2007 that Michael was considering converting to Islam. By November 2008, multiple sources claimed that he had formally converted, with some reports detailing a ceremony where he wore Islamic attire and recited the shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith 1610.

  2. Interest in Islam: Jackson reportedly expressed a deep interest in Islam, drawn by its teachings and the call to prayer. Jermaine Jackson noted that Michael was inspired by conversations with Muslim friends and began reading about the religion 24.

  3. Life in Bahrain: Following his death, it was reported that Jackson had spent time in Bahrain, where he was said to have formed close relationships with local figures, including Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa 9. However, claims that he is still alive and living in Bahrain under a new identity lack credible evidence.

  4. Conspiracy Theories: The notion that Jackson faked his death and is living secretly has circulated widely on social media and various conspiracy theory platforms. However, these claims often rely on anecdotal evidence and lack substantial verification 57.

Analysis

The sources discussing Michael Jackson's conversion to Islam generally come from reputable news outlets and interviews with family members, such as Jermaine Jackson. However, the reliability of these claims varies:

  • Credibility of Sources: Articles from established publications like The Atlantic and Los Angeles Times provide context and background to Jackson's interest in Islam, but they do not confirm the specifics of his conversion ceremony 23. The Los Angeles Times and Al Arabiya provide direct quotes from family members, which adds a layer of credibility, but these sources may also carry bias due to their familial connections 26.

  • Conspiracy Claims: The assertion that Jackson is alive and living in Bahrain is primarily propagated by less credible sources, including social media and conspiracy theory websites. These claims often lack verifiable evidence and rely on speculation rather than factual reporting 57.

  • Methodological Concerns: The methodology behind the claims of Jackson's continued existence is questionable. Many conspiracy theories do not provide concrete evidence and often ignore the overwhelming consensus regarding his death in 2009, which was confirmed by multiple medical professionals and authorities.

  • Potential Conflicts of Interest: Some sources may have a vested interest in promoting the narrative of Jackson's continued life, particularly those that thrive on sensationalism or conspiracy theories. This can skew the presentation of facts and lead to misleading conclusions.

What We Don't Know

While there is some evidence supporting the claim that Michael Jackson converted to Islam, the assertion that he is alive and living in Bahrain remains unsubstantiated. Additional information that would be helpful includes:

  • Official Statements: Any official statements from Jackson's estate or family members regarding his religious beliefs and the circumstances of his death would provide clarity.
  • Medical Records: Access to medical records or credible eyewitness accounts from the time of his death could help dispel or support claims regarding his passing.
  • Investigative Reports: Thorough investigative journalism that examines the circumstances surrounding Jackson's death and the subsequent conspiracy theories could provide a more comprehensive understanding.

Conclusion

Verdict: Mostly False

The claim that Michael Jackson converted to Islam before his death is supported by some credible evidence, including statements from family members and reputable news sources. However, the assertion that he is alive and living in Bahrain under a new identity is largely unfounded and relies on conspiracy theories that lack substantial verification.

While there is a documented interest in Islam and potential conversion, the overwhelming consensus regarding Jackson's death in 2009, confirmed by medical professionals, casts significant doubt on the claims of his continued existence. The evidence supporting the notion of him living secretly is primarily anecdotal and derived from unreliable sources.

It is important to recognize the limitations in the available evidence, particularly regarding the conspiracy theories surrounding Jackson's life and death. The lack of concrete proof and the reliance on speculative narratives highlight the uncertainty inherent in these claims.

Readers are encouraged to critically evaluate information and consider the credibility of sources when encountering sensational claims, especially those involving public figures and conspiracy theories.

Fact Check: Paul Krugman Paul Krugman We’re All Rats Now Time to take a stand, again, against racism Paul Krugman Jun 30, 2025 Zohran Mamdani’s upset victory in New York’s Democratic primary has created panic in MAGAland. Stephen Miller, the architect of Donald Trump’s deportation policies, waxed apocalyptic: Scott Bessent, the Treasury secretary, declared that New York is about to turn into “Caracas on the Hudson.” And Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama basically declared New York’s voters subhuman, saying: These inner-city rats, they live off the federal government. And that’s one reason we’re $37 trillion in debt. And it’s time we find these rats and we send them back home, that are living off the American taxpayers that are working very hard every week to pay taxes. These reactions are vile, and they’re also dishonest. Whatever these men may claim, it’s all about bigotry. Miller isn’t concerned about the state of New York “society.” What bothers him is the idea of nonwhite people having political power. Bessent isn’t really deeply worried about Zamdani’s economic ideas. But he feels free, maybe even obliged, to slander a foreign-born Muslim with language he would never use about a white Christian politician, even if that politician were (like some of his colleagues in the Trump administration) a total crackpot. And while Tuberville stands out even within his caucus as an ignorant fool, his willingness to use dehumanizing language about millions of people shows that raw racism is rapidly becoming mainstream in American politics. Remember, during the campaign both Trump and JD Vance amplified the slanders about Haitians eating pets. And now that they’re in office, you can see the resurgence of raw racism all across Trump administration policies, large and small. You can see it, for example, in the cuts at the National Institutes of Health, which are so tilted against racial minorities that a federal judge — one appointed by Ronald Reagan! — declared I’ve never seen a record where racial discrimination was so palpable. I’ve sat on this bench now for 40 years. I’ve never seen government racial discrimination like this. You can see it in the renaming of military bases after Confederate generals — that is, traitors who fought for slavery. You can even see it in a change in the military’s shaving policy that is clearly custom-designed to drive Black men — who account for around a quarter of the Army’s new recruits — out of the service. So racism and bigotry are back, big time. Who’s safe? Nobody. Are you a legal immigrant? Well, the Supreme Court just allowed Trump to summarily strip half a million U.S. residents of that status, and only a fool would imagine that this is the end of the story. Anyway, when masked men who claim to be ICE agents but refuse to show identification are grabbing people off the streets because they think those people look illegal, does legal status even matter? Does it even matter if you’re a U.S. citizen? And the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is set to massively increase ICE’s funding — basically setting up a huge national secret police force. Now, maybe you imagine that you yourself won’t suffer from this new reign of bigotry and imagine that everyone you care about is similarly safe. But if that’s what you think, you’re likely to face a rude awakening. I personally don’t have any illusions of safety. Yes, I’m a native-born white citizen. But my wife and her family are Black, and some of my friends and relatives are foreign-born U.S. citizens. Furthermore, I’m Jewish, and anyone who knows their history realizes that whenever right-wing bigotry is on the ascendant, we’re always next in line. Are there really people out there naïve enough to believe MAGA’s claims to be against antisemitism, who can’t see the transparent cynicism and dishonesty? The fact is that the Trump administration already contains a number of figures with strong ties to antisemitic extremists. The Great Replacement Theory, which has de facto become part of MAGA’s ideology, doesn’t just say that there’s a conspiracy to replace whites with people of color; it says that it’s a Jewish conspiracy. So I’m definitely scared of what the many antisemites inside or with close ties to the Trump administration may eventually do. And no, I’m not frightened at all by the prospect that New York may soon have a somewhat leftist Muslim mayor. Anyway, my personal fears are beside the point. Everyone who cares about keeping America America needs to take a stand against the resurgence of bigotry. Because the truth is that we’re all rats now.
