Did JD Vance Kill Pope Francis? A Fact-Check

Introduction

The claim that U.S. Vice President JD Vance killed Pope Francis has circulated online following the pontiff's death on April 21, 2025, just one day after a meeting between the two. This assertion has been met with skepticism, and various sources have attempted to clarify the circumstances surrounding the claim.

What We Know

  1. Meeting Details: JD Vance met with Pope Francis on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025. This was one of the pope's last public engagements before his death the following day 12.
  2. Cause of Death: The Vatican reported that Pope Francis died due to complications from a cerebral stroke, which led to irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse 47.
  3. Public Reaction: Following the pope's death, social media platforms saw a surge in claims linking Vance's visit to the pontiff's demise, with many users suggesting a causal relationship 357.
  4. Vance's Comments: In response to the backlash, JD Vance remarked that Pope Francis appeared "obviously very ill" during their meeting, indicating that the pope's health had been deteriorating prior to their encounter 69.

Analysis

The claim that JD Vance killed Pope Francis appears to stem from a combination of misinformation and the timing of events.

Source Evaluation

  • AP News and New York Times: These are reputable news organizations known for their journalistic standards. They report on the meeting and the subsequent death of Pope Francis without suggesting any foul play 12.
  • France 24 and The Guardian: Both outlets explicitly refute the claim that Vance killed the pope, labeling it as false and highlighting the absurdity of the assertion 35. Their reporting is based on factual accounts of the events leading up to the pope's death.
  • The New Republic: This publication provides a more in-depth investigation into the claims, discussing the context of Vance's visit and the health of the pope. However, it also includes speculative language regarding Vance's "bad touch," which may detract from its credibility 4.
  • American Entertainment News: This source describes the online reaction to the claim but does not provide substantial evidence to support or refute it 7. It may have a more sensationalist angle, which could lead to bias.
  • Daily Mail and Town & Country: These sources report on the social media reactions and public tributes following the pope's death but may have a tendency towards sensationalism, which can affect their reliability 810.

Methodological Concerns

The primary issue with the claim lies in its reliance on coincidence rather than evidence. The timing of the meeting and the subsequent death of Pope Francis has led to speculative narratives, but no credible evidence supports the assertion that Vance's visit had any direct impact on the pope's health or demise.

Conflicts of Interest

Some sources may have political biases that could influence their reporting. For example, outlets with a strong political affiliation may frame the narrative to align with their audience's beliefs, potentially skewing the facts.

What Additional Information Would Be Helpful?

  • Medical Reports: Detailed medical reports from the Vatican regarding Pope Francis's health leading up to his death would provide clarity on the circumstances.
  • Expert Opinions: Insights from medical professionals on the implications of the pope's health condition could help contextualize the timeline of events.
  • Social Media Analysis: A thorough analysis of the social media discourse surrounding the claim could help understand the origins and spread of misinformation.

Conclusion

Verdict: False

The claim that JD Vance killed Pope Francis is unfounded and lacks credible evidence. The assertion appears to be based on coincidental timing rather than any causal relationship. The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis died from complications related to a cerebral stroke, and reputable news sources have consistently refuted the claim of foul play. While JD Vance's comments about the pope's health during their meeting may have fueled speculation, they do not substantiate the claim that he was responsible for the pope's death.

It is important to recognize that misinformation can spread rapidly, especially in the wake of significant events. The evidence available does not support the narrative that Vance's visit had any impact on the pope's health or demise. However, the discourse surrounding this claim highlights the need for critical evaluation of information, particularly in the age of social media where sensationalism can distort facts.

Readers are encouraged to approach such claims with skepticism and to seek out reliable sources for accurate information. Acknowledging the limitations of available evidence is crucial in forming a well-rounded understanding of any situation.

Fact Check: Paul Krugman Paul Krugman We’re All Rats Now Time to take a stand, again, against racism Paul Krugman Jun 30, 2025 Zohran Mamdani’s upset victory in New York’s Democratic primary has created panic in MAGAland. Stephen Miller, the architect of Donald Trump’s deportation policies, waxed apocalyptic: Scott Bessent, the Treasury secretary, declared that New York is about to turn into “Caracas on the Hudson.” And Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama basically declared New York’s voters subhuman, saying: These inner-city rats, they live off the federal government. And that’s one reason we’re $37 trillion in debt. And it’s time we find these rats and we send them back home, that are living off the American taxpayers that are working very hard every week to pay taxes. These reactions are vile, and they’re also dishonest. Whatever these men may claim, it’s all about bigotry. Miller isn’t concerned about the state of New York “society.” What bothers him is the idea of nonwhite people having political power. Bessent isn’t really deeply worried about Zamdani’s economic ideas. But he feels free, maybe even obliged, to slander a foreign-born Muslim with language he would never use about a white Christian politician, even if that politician were (like some of his colleagues in the Trump administration) a total crackpot. And while Tuberville stands out even within his caucus as an ignorant fool, his willingness to use dehumanizing language about millions of people shows that raw racism is rapidly becoming mainstream in American politics. Remember, during the campaign both Trump and JD Vance amplified the slanders about Haitians eating pets. And now that they’re in office, you can see the resurgence of raw racism all across Trump administration policies, large and small. You can see it, for example, in the cuts at the National Institutes of Health, which are so tilted against racial minorities that a federal judge — one appointed by Ronald Reagan! — declared I’ve never seen a record where racial discrimination was so palpable. I’ve sat on this bench now for 40 years. I’ve never seen government racial discrimination like this. You can see it in the renaming of military bases after Confederate generals — that is, traitors who fought for slavery. You can even see it in a change in the military’s shaving policy that is clearly custom-designed to drive Black men — who account for around a quarter of the Army’s new recruits — out of the service. So racism and bigotry are back, big time. Who’s safe? Nobody. Are you a legal immigrant? Well, the Supreme Court just allowed Trump to summarily strip half a million U.S. residents of that status, and only a fool would imagine that this is the end of the story. Anyway, when masked men who claim to be ICE agents but refuse to show identification are grabbing people off the streets because they think those people look illegal, does legal status even matter? Does it even matter if you’re a U.S. citizen? And the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is set to massively increase ICE’s funding — basically setting up a huge national secret police force. Now, maybe you imagine that you yourself won’t suffer from this new reign of bigotry and imagine that everyone you care about is similarly safe. But if that’s what you think, you’re likely to face a rude awakening. I personally don’t have any illusions of safety. Yes, I’m a native-born white citizen. But my wife and her family are Black, and some of my friends and relatives are foreign-born U.S. citizens. Furthermore, I’m Jewish, and anyone who knows their history realizes that whenever right-wing bigotry is on the ascendant, we’re always next in line. Are there really people out there naïve enough to believe MAGA’s claims to be against antisemitism, who can’t see the transparent cynicism and dishonesty? The fact is that the Trump administration already contains a number of figures with strong ties to antisemitic extremists. The Great Replacement Theory, which has de facto become part of MAGA’s ideology, doesn’t just say that there’s a conspiracy to replace whites with people of color; it says that it’s a Jewish conspiracy. So I’m definitely scared of what the many antisemites inside or with close ties to the Trump administration may eventually do. And no, I’m not frightened at all by the prospect that New York may soon have a somewhat leftist Muslim mayor. Anyway, my personal fears are beside the point. Everyone who cares about keeping America America needs to take a stand against the resurgence of bigotry. Because the truth is that we’re all rats now.
