Claim Analysis: "J. D. Vance regularly wears mascara during public appearances."

1. Introduction

The claim that J. D. Vance, a prominent political figure and Republican vice presidential candidate, regularly wears mascara during public appearances has generated considerable discussion and speculation. This topic has gained traction on social media and in various media outlets, leading to questions about Vance's makeup choices and their implications for his public image.

2. What We Know

Several sources have reported on the speculation surrounding Vance's use of makeup, particularly eyeliner.

  • Social Media Speculation: A number of social media posts have questioned whether Vance wears eyeliner, especially during televised events and debates, suggesting that this has become a topic of public interest and debate 16.

  • Wife's Statement: Usha Vance, J.D. Vance's wife, has publicly stated that her husband's eyelashes are "all natural," denying the rumors that he uses mascara or eyeliner 45. This assertion is significant as it comes from a close family member, although it may also reflect a desire to protect his public image.

  • Expert Opinions: Some makeup artists have speculated that Vance might use makeup to enhance his appearance for public appearances, which is a common practice among many public figures 710. However, these opinions are speculative and not based on direct evidence.

  • Media Coverage: Various media outlets have covered the topic, highlighting the public's fascination with Vance's appearance. For instance, articles have noted that the discussion around his makeup choices has overshadowed more substantive political debates 238.

3. Analysis

The evidence surrounding the claim that J. D. Vance wears mascara is largely anecdotal and speculative.

  • Credibility of Sources: The sources discussing Vance's makeup range from established media outlets like Slate and The Independent to less formal blogs and social media commentary. While some sources, like Slate, are generally regarded as credible, others may have less rigorous editorial standards. For instance, blogs such as TruthOrFake and My Glow Journey may lack the same level of scrutiny in their reporting 1310.

  • Bias and Reliability: Some articles may exhibit bias, either in favor of or against Vance, which could affect the portrayal of his makeup choices. For example, media coverage that emphasizes his appearance may do so to draw attention away from his political positions, while other articles may aim to ridicule him, reflecting a more partisan bias 26.

  • Methodological Concerns: The claims about Vance's makeup are primarily based on visual observations and social media speculation rather than direct evidence or interviews with Vance himself. This raises questions about the reliability of the conclusions drawn. Additionally, the lack of direct evidence, such as a confirmed instance of him wearing mascara, makes it difficult to substantiate the claim definitively.

  • Public Perception: The fascination with Vance's appearance may be indicative of broader societal attitudes towards male politicians and their grooming choices. This could reflect changing norms regarding masculinity and public presentation, but it also risks trivializing serious political discourse.

4. Conclusion

Verdict: False

The claim that J. D. Vance regularly wears mascara during public appearances is determined to be false based on the available evidence. Key points leading to this conclusion include the explicit denial from Vance's wife, Usha Vance, who stated that his eyelashes are "all natural," and the lack of direct evidence supporting the claim. While some makeup artists have speculated about the use of makeup for public appearances, these opinions are not substantiated by concrete evidence.

It is important to note that the discussion surrounding Vance's appearance may reflect broader societal trends regarding male grooming in politics, which can sometimes overshadow substantive political discourse. Additionally, the evidence is primarily anecdotal and speculative, relying heavily on social media commentary and visual observations rather than verified facts.

Readers should be aware of the limitations in the available evidence and the potential biases present in the sources discussing this claim. As always, it is crucial to critically evaluate information and consider multiple perspectives before forming conclusions.

Fact Check: Paul Krugman Paul Krugman We’re All Rats Now Time to take a stand, again, against racism Paul Krugman Jun 30, 2025 Zohran Mamdani’s upset victory in New York’s Democratic primary has created panic in MAGAland. Stephen Miller, the architect of Donald Trump’s deportation policies, waxed apocalyptic: Scott Bessent, the Treasury secretary, declared that New York is about to turn into “Caracas on the Hudson.” And Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama basically declared New York’s voters subhuman, saying: These inner-city rats, they live off the federal government. And that’s one reason we’re $37 trillion in debt. And it’s time we find these rats and we send them back home, that are living off the American taxpayers that are working very hard every week to pay taxes. These reactions are vile, and they’re also dishonest. Whatever these men may claim, it’s all about bigotry. Miller isn’t concerned about the state of New York “society.” What bothers him is the idea of nonwhite people having political power. Bessent isn’t really deeply worried about Zamdani’s economic ideas. But he feels free, maybe even obliged, to slander a foreign-born Muslim with language he would never use about a white Christian politician, even if that politician were (like some of his colleagues in the Trump administration) a total crackpot. And while Tuberville stands out even within his caucus as an ignorant fool, his willingness to use dehumanizing language about millions of people shows that raw racism is rapidly becoming mainstream in American politics. Remember, during the campaign both Trump and JD Vance amplified the slanders about Haitians eating pets. And now that they’re in office, you can see the resurgence of raw racism all across Trump administration policies, large and small. You can see it, for example, in the cuts at the National Institutes of Health, which are so tilted against racial minorities that a federal judge — one appointed by Ronald Reagan! — declared I’ve never seen a record where racial discrimination was so palpable. I’ve sat on this bench now for 40 years. I’ve never seen government racial discrimination like this. You can see it in the renaming of military bases after Confederate generals — that is, traitors who fought for slavery. You can even see it in a change in the military’s shaving policy that is clearly custom-designed to drive Black men — who account for around a quarter of the Army’s new recruits — out of the service. So racism and bigotry are back, big time. Who’s safe? Nobody. Are you a legal immigrant? Well, the Supreme Court just allowed Trump to summarily strip half a million U.S. residents of that status, and only a fool would imagine that this is the end of the story. Anyway, when masked men who claim to be ICE agents but refuse to show identification are grabbing people off the streets because they think those people look illegal, does legal status even matter? Does it even matter if you’re a U.S. citizen? And the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is set to massively increase ICE’s funding — basically setting up a huge national secret police force. Now, maybe you imagine that you yourself won’t suffer from this new reign of bigotry and imagine that everyone you care about is similarly safe. But if that’s what you think, you’re likely to face a rude awakening. I personally don’t have any illusions of safety. Yes, I’m a native-born white citizen. But my wife and her family are Black, and some of my friends and relatives are foreign-born U.S. citizens. Furthermore, I’m Jewish, and anyone who knows their history realizes that whenever right-wing bigotry is on the ascendant, we’re always next in line. Are there really people out there naïve enough to believe MAGA’s claims to be against antisemitism, who can’t see the transparent cynicism and dishonesty? The fact is that the Trump administration already contains a number of figures with strong ties to antisemitic extremists. The Great Replacement Theory, which has de facto become part of MAGA’s ideology, doesn’t just say that there’s a conspiracy to replace whites with people of color; it says that it’s a Jewish conspiracy. So I’m definitely scared of what the many antisemites inside or with close ties to the Trump administration may eventually do. And no, I’m not frightened at all by the prospect that New York may soon have a somewhat leftist Muslim mayor. Anyway, my personal fears are beside the point. Everyone who cares about keeping America America needs to take a stand against the resurgence of bigotry. Because the truth is that we’re all rats now.
