Is Klarna Safe? A Detailed Examination of the Claim

Introduction

The claim being examined is whether Klarna, a popular "Buy Now, Pay Later" (BNPL) service, is safe for consumers to use. This question arises in the context of increasing scrutiny over the security and reliability of financial technology platforms, especially as they gain popularity amid economic uncertainty.

What We Know

Klarna is a financial technology company that allows consumers to make purchases and pay for them later, either in installments or after a set period. It has seen significant growth, with a reported 71% increase in the total value of items purchased through its services in 2022 [2].

Security Features

According to Security.org, Klarna employs strong encryption, 24/7 monitoring, and data protection measures to safeguard user accounts [1]. The platform also has protocols in place for users who wish to delete their accounts, which may enhance user control over personal data.

Customer Feedback

On Trustpilot, Klarna has a rating of approximately 4.0 out of 5, based on hundreds of thousands of reviews [3][8]. While this suggests a generally positive reception, it is important to consider that customer reviews can be influenced by individual experiences and may not provide a comprehensive view of the service's safety.

Risks and Concerns

Conversely, some sources highlight potential risks associated with using Klarna. For instance, a review from Getsby notes that Klarna can be susceptible to cyberattacks, including phishing scams and data breaches [5]. This raises questions about the overall safety of the platform, especially in light of increasing cyber threats in the financial sector.

Regulatory Context

Klarna has faced scrutiny from regulators in various countries regarding its business practices and the implications of BNPL services on consumer debt [2]. This scrutiny suggests that while the platform may have safety measures in place, the regulatory environment is still evolving, and potential risks may not be fully understood.

Analysis

Source Evaluation

  1. Security.org: This source provides a positive assessment of Klarna's security features but lacks detailed evidence or independent verification of its claims. The website is focused on digital safety, which may indicate a bias towards promoting secure platforms [1].

  2. GOBankingRates: This article discusses the popularity of BNPL services and mentions regulatory scrutiny. However, it does not delve deeply into specific safety features or risks associated with Klarna, which limits its utility for evaluating the claim [2].

  3. Trustpilot: While customer reviews can provide insight into user experiences, they are subjective and can be influenced by various factors, including individual expectations and experiences. The high volume of reviews may lend credibility, but the potential for bias remains [3][8].

  4. Getsby: This source raises valid concerns about the risks of cyberattacks, which is crucial for assessing the safety of any financial platform. However, it does not provide a comprehensive overview of Klarna's security measures, which could lead to an incomplete picture [5].

  5. US News Money and Forbes Advisor: These sources provide general reviews of Klarna but do not focus specifically on safety, making them less relevant for this claim [4][6].

  6. Money to the Masses: This article discusses Klarna's late fees and their implications for users, but it does not address safety concerns directly, which is the primary focus of the claim [7].

Conclusion

Verdict: Partially True

The examination of Klarna's safety reveals a mixed picture. On one hand, Klarna implements several security features, such as encryption and 24/7 monitoring, which suggest a commitment to protecting user data. Additionally, customer feedback is generally positive, with a Trustpilot rating of around 4.0 out of 5. However, significant concerns remain regarding the platform's vulnerability to cyberattacks and the evolving regulatory scrutiny it faces.

The term "Partially True" reflects the dual nature of the evidence: while there are robust security measures in place, the potential risks associated with cyber threats and the lack of comprehensive independent evaluations introduce uncertainty about the overall safety of using Klarna.

It is important to acknowledge the limitations in the available evidence, particularly the reliance on subjective customer reviews and the varying methodologies of different sources. As such, consumers should approach the use of Klarna with caution and remain informed about the potential risks involved.

Readers are encouraged to critically evaluate information themselves and consider both the positive and negative aspects of using financial technology services like Klarna.

Fact Check: Paul Krugman Paul Krugman We’re All Rats Now Time to take a stand, again, against racism Paul Krugman Jun 30, 2025 Zohran Mamdani’s upset victory in New York’s Democratic primary has created panic in MAGAland. Stephen Miller, the architect of Donald Trump’s deportation policies, waxed apocalyptic: Scott Bessent, the Treasury secretary, declared that New York is about to turn into “Caracas on the Hudson.” And Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama basically declared New York’s voters subhuman, saying: These inner-city rats, they live off the federal government. And that’s one reason we’re $37 trillion in debt. And it’s time we find these rats and we send them back home, that are living off the American taxpayers that are working very hard every week to pay taxes. These reactions are vile, and they’re also dishonest. Whatever these men may claim, it’s all about bigotry. Miller isn’t concerned about the state of New York “society.” What bothers him is the idea of nonwhite people having political power. Bessent isn’t really deeply worried about Zamdani’s economic ideas. But he feels free, maybe even obliged, to slander a foreign-born Muslim with language he would never use about a white Christian politician, even if that politician were (like some of his colleagues in the Trump administration) a total crackpot. And while Tuberville stands out even within his caucus as an ignorant fool, his willingness to use dehumanizing language about millions of people shows that raw racism is rapidly becoming mainstream in American politics. Remember, during the campaign both Trump and JD Vance amplified the slanders about Haitians eating pets. And now that they’re in office, you can see the resurgence of raw racism all across Trump administration policies, large and small. You can see it, for example, in the cuts at the National Institutes of Health, which are so tilted against racial minorities that a federal judge — one appointed by Ronald Reagan! — declared I’ve never seen a record where racial discrimination was so palpable. I’ve sat on this bench now for 40 years. I’ve never seen government racial discrimination like this. You can see it in the renaming of military bases after Confederate generals — that is, traitors who fought for slavery. You can even see it in a change in the military’s shaving policy that is clearly custom-designed to drive Black men — who account for around a quarter of the Army’s new recruits — out of the service. So racism and bigotry are back, big time. Who’s safe? Nobody. Are you a legal immigrant? Well, the Supreme Court just allowed Trump to summarily strip half a million U.S. residents of that status, and only a fool would imagine that this is the end of the story. Anyway, when masked men who claim to be ICE agents but refuse to show identification are grabbing people off the streets because they think those people look illegal, does legal status even matter? Does it even matter if you’re a U.S. citizen? And the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is set to massively increase ICE’s funding — basically setting up a huge national secret police force. Now, maybe you imagine that you yourself won’t suffer from this new reign of bigotry and imagine that everyone you care about is similarly safe. But if that’s what you think, you’re likely to face a rude awakening. I personally don’t have any illusions of safety. Yes, I’m a native-born white citizen. But my wife and her family are Black, and some of my friends and relatives are foreign-born U.S. citizens. Furthermore, I’m Jewish, and anyone who knows their history realizes that whenever right-wing bigotry is on the ascendant, we’re always next in line. Are there really people out there naïve enough to believe MAGA’s claims to be against antisemitism, who can’t see the transparent cynicism and dishonesty? The fact is that the Trump administration already contains a number of figures with strong ties to antisemitic extremists. The Great Replacement Theory, which has de facto become part of MAGA’s ideology, doesn’t just say that there’s a conspiracy to replace whites with people of color; it says that it’s a Jewish conspiracy. So I’m definitely scared of what the many antisemites inside or with close ties to the Trump administration may eventually do. And no, I’m not frightened at all by the prospect that New York may soon have a somewhat leftist Muslim mayor. Anyway, my personal fears are beside the point. Everyone who cares about keeping America America needs to take a stand against the resurgence of bigotry. Because the truth is that we’re all rats now.
