Is Jewish a Race?

The question of whether "Jewish" constitutes a race has been a topic of considerable debate, intersecting with issues of identity, ethnicity, and religion. This inquiry often arises in discussions about the historical and sociopolitical contexts surrounding Jewish communities, particularly in relation to concepts of race and ethnicity in contemporary society.

What We Know

  1. Ethnoreligious Identity: Jews are often described as an ethnoreligious group, which means they share both a religious tradition and a common ancestry. According to the Wikipedia entry on Jews, they originate from the ancient Israelites and have a distinct cultural and historical identity [3].

  2. Demographics in the U.S.: A 2013 study indicated that 94% of U.S. Jews identified as white, suggesting a racial classification that aligns with broader societal definitions of race [1]. However, this demographic categorization does not capture the full complexity of Jewish identity.

  3. Genetic Diversity: The book "The Myth of the Jewish Race" argues that due to intermarriage and conversion throughout history, Jews cannot be genetically characterized as a distinct race. This perspective emphasizes the fluidity of Jewish identity, which has evolved over centuries [2].

  4. Cultural and Historical Context: My Jewish Learning states that Jews often define themselves as descendants of biblical patriarchs, and this self-identification can complicate racial classifications. The article suggests that the concept of race is not particularly useful in categorizing Jews, given their diverse backgrounds [4].

  5. Legal Definitions: In Israel, the Law of Return allows for the children and grandchildren of Jews to claim citizenship, regardless of their religious practice or racial background. This legal framework implies a broader understanding of Jewish identity that transcends traditional racial definitions [6].

  6. Contemporary Perspectives: A discussion on Chabad.org highlights ongoing debates among scientists and sociologists about the utility of race as a classification system. It notes that many scholars argue that race is a social construct rather than a biological reality [5].

  7. Historical Misuse of Racial Concepts: The article from Religious Question discusses how pseudoscientific racial theories have historically portrayed Jews in negative light, reinforcing harmful stereotypes that equate Jewish identity with race rather than religion or culture [8].

Analysis

The claim that "Jewish" is a race is complex and multifaceted. The sources reviewed present a range of perspectives, from those asserting that Jews cannot be classified as a race due to their diverse genetic backgrounds [2] to those who acknowledge the historical and cultural factors that contribute to a shared Jewish identity [4][5].

Source Evaluation

  • Wikipedia: While it provides a broad overview, Wikipedia entries can vary in reliability due to the collaborative nature of the platform. However, it is generally a good starting point for understanding complex topics [3].

  • My Jewish Learning and Chabad.org: These sources are reputable within Jewish communities and provide insights into cultural and religious perspectives. However, they may carry inherent biases, as they are aimed at affirming Jewish identity and traditions [4][5].

  • The Myth of the Jewish Race: This source is academic and presents a critical view of racial classifications. It is important to consider the author's credentials and the context in which the work was published to assess its reliability [2].

  • History News Network and Religious Question: These articles provide historical context and critique the misuse of racial theories. They are useful for understanding the implications of labeling Jews as a race but should be read with an awareness of potential biases in their interpretations [6][8].

Methodological Concerns

The discussions around Jewish identity often lack empirical data to support claims about race. Many sources rely on historical narratives and sociocultural analysis rather than genetic studies, which could provide a more nuanced understanding of Jewish identity. Additional research, particularly in genetics and anthropology, would be beneficial to clarify the relationship between Jewish identity and race.

Conclusion

Verdict: Partially True

The assertion that "Jewish" constitutes a race is partially true, as it reflects the complexity of Jewish identity, which encompasses elements of ethnicity, culture, and religion. Evidence indicates that Jews often identify as an ethnoreligious group with a shared ancestry, yet the genetic diversity among Jews and the historical context of their identity complicate any strict racial classification.

While demographic data suggest that many Jews in the U.S. identify as white, this does not fully capture the multifaceted nature of Jewish identity, which has evolved over time and varies significantly across different communities. Furthermore, the concept of race itself is increasingly viewed as a social construct rather than a definitive biological category.

It is important to acknowledge the limitations in the available evidence, as much of the discussion around Jewish identity relies on sociocultural narratives rather than empirical genetic studies. This lack of definitive data contributes to the uncertainty surrounding the classification of Jewish identity as a race.

Readers are encouraged to critically evaluate information regarding identity and race, recognizing the nuances and complexities involved in such discussions.

Fact Check: Paul Krugman Paul Krugman We’re All Rats Now Time to take a stand, again, against racism Paul Krugman Jun 30, 2025 Zohran Mamdani’s upset victory in New York’s Democratic primary has created panic in MAGAland. Stephen Miller, the architect of Donald Trump’s deportation policies, waxed apocalyptic: Scott Bessent, the Treasury secretary, declared that New York is about to turn into “Caracas on the Hudson.” And Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama basically declared New York’s voters subhuman, saying: These inner-city rats, they live off the federal government. And that’s one reason we’re $37 trillion in debt. And it’s time we find these rats and we send them back home, that are living off the American taxpayers that are working very hard every week to pay taxes. These reactions are vile, and they’re also dishonest. Whatever these men may claim, it’s all about bigotry. Miller isn’t concerned about the state of New York “society.” What bothers him is the idea of nonwhite people having political power. Bessent isn’t really deeply worried about Zamdani’s economic ideas. But he feels free, maybe even obliged, to slander a foreign-born Muslim with language he would never use about a white Christian politician, even if that politician were (like some of his colleagues in the Trump administration) a total crackpot. And while Tuberville stands out even within his caucus as an ignorant fool, his willingness to use dehumanizing language about millions of people shows that raw racism is rapidly becoming mainstream in American politics. Remember, during the campaign both Trump and JD Vance amplified the slanders about Haitians eating pets. And now that they’re in office, you can see the resurgence of raw racism all across Trump administration policies, large and small. You can see it, for example, in the cuts at the National Institutes of Health, which are so tilted against racial minorities that a federal judge — one appointed by Ronald Reagan! — declared I’ve never seen a record where racial discrimination was so palpable. I’ve sat on this bench now for 40 years. I’ve never seen government racial discrimination like this. You can see it in the renaming of military bases after Confederate generals — that is, traitors who fought for slavery. You can even see it in a change in the military’s shaving policy that is clearly custom-designed to drive Black men — who account for around a quarter of the Army’s new recruits — out of the service. So racism and bigotry are back, big time. Who’s safe? Nobody. Are you a legal immigrant? Well, the Supreme Court just allowed Trump to summarily strip half a million U.S. residents of that status, and only a fool would imagine that this is the end of the story. Anyway, when masked men who claim to be ICE agents but refuse to show identification are grabbing people off the streets because they think those people look illegal, does legal status even matter? Does it even matter if you’re a U.S. citizen? And the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is set to massively increase ICE’s funding — basically setting up a huge national secret police force. Now, maybe you imagine that you yourself won’t suffer from this new reign of bigotry and imagine that everyone you care about is similarly safe. But if that’s what you think, you’re likely to face a rude awakening. I personally don’t have any illusions of safety. Yes, I’m a native-born white citizen. But my wife and her family are Black, and some of my friends and relatives are foreign-born U.S. citizens. Furthermore, I’m Jewish, and anyone who knows their history realizes that whenever right-wing bigotry is on the ascendant, we’re always next in line. Are there really people out there naïve enough to believe MAGA’s claims to be against antisemitism, who can’t see the transparent cynicism and dishonesty? The fact is that the Trump administration already contains a number of figures with strong ties to antisemitic extremists. The Great Replacement Theory, which has de facto become part of MAGA’s ideology, doesn’t just say that there’s a conspiracy to replace whites with people of color; it says that it’s a Jewish conspiracy. So I’m definitely scared of what the many antisemites inside or with close ties to the Trump administration may eventually do. And no, I’m not frightened at all by the prospect that New York may soon have a somewhat leftist Muslim mayor. Anyway, my personal fears are beside the point. Everyone who cares about keeping America America needs to take a stand against the resurgence of bigotry. Because the truth is that we’re all rats now.
