Fact Check: "Counterterrorism expert warns of 5,000-6,000 Iranian-backed terrorists in the US"

What We Know

The claim that there are "5,000-6,000 Iranian-backed terrorists in the US" appears to originate from a statement made by a counterterrorism expert, as reported by various news outlets. The context of the claim suggests a concern regarding the presence of individuals affiliated with Iranian-backed groups, particularly in light of heightened tensions involving Iran and its proxies, such as Hamas and Hizballah.

According to the Country Reports on Terrorism 2023, Iran is identified as the leading state sponsor of terrorism, facilitating a range of terrorist activities both domestically and globally. The report highlights that Iranian-aligned militia groups have been involved in various attacks and plots, emphasizing the ongoing threat posed by these organizations. However, it does not provide a specific number of Iranian-backed terrorists residing in the U.S.

In a House Committee hearing on homeland security, officials discussed the growing activities of Iranian-backed groups and their implications for U.S. security. This context supports the notion that there is a recognized threat from such groups, but again, no specific figures were mentioned.

Analysis

The claim of "5,000-6,000 Iranian-backed terrorists" in the U.S. is not substantiated by official reports or credible sources. The Country Reports on Terrorism 2023 and the 2019 report provide insights into Iran's support for terrorism but do not quantify the number of Iranian-backed terrorists in the U.S. Instead, they focus on the broader threat landscape and the activities of Iranian proxies globally.

The source of the claim appears to be a statement made by a counterterrorism expert, which may lack rigorous empirical backing. While experts often provide assessments based on intelligence and experience, their statements can sometimes reflect estimates or concerns rather than concrete data. The reliability of such claims can vary significantly based on the expert's background, the context in which the statement is made, and the evidence supporting it.

Furthermore, the DHS, DEA, and FBI testimony indicates a recognition of the threat posed by Iranian-backed groups but does not confirm the specific number cited in the claim. This suggests that while there is a legitimate concern regarding Iranian influence and potential terrorist activities, the specific figure provided lacks corroboration from authoritative sources.

Conclusion

Needs Research. The claim that there are "5,000-6,000 Iranian-backed terrorists in the US" is not supported by credible evidence or official reports. While there is a recognized threat from Iranian-backed groups, the specific number cited appears to be speculative and lacks substantiation. Further investigation and reliable data are needed to accurately assess the presence and activities of Iranian-backed individuals in the U.S.

Fact Check: I can promise you that NWS was NOT eradicated in 1966. I was a teen in the 1970s living/working on a ranch in far west Texas. The ranch had 2000 sheep at one time. We had many many cases of screw worm infestations. I became an expert open pasture roper during the summers. We roped the sheep and applied medicine (white king? then purple stuffin later years). I carried 2 ropes on my saddle and they smelled like a corpse. So much for facts.
