Are GWM Utes Any Good?

Introduction

The claim in question is whether GWM (Great Wall Motors) utes, specifically models like the Cannon-X and Cannon-XSR, are worth considering for potential buyers. This inquiry arises amid a competitive ute market, where GWM has positioned itself as a budget-friendly alternative. The assessment of GWM utes involves various factors, including performance, pricing, reliability, and user satisfaction.

What We Know

  1. Pricing: The GWM Ute Cannon-X starts at approximately AUD 33,990 drive-away, while the better-equipped Cannon-X is priced around AUD 43,990 drive-away. This pricing strategy aims to attract buyers looking for affordable options in the ute market 23.

  2. Performance: Reviews indicate that the GWM Ute offers commendable performance, particularly in towing scenarios. However, performance can vary significantly based on the load and conditions. For instance, it performed well when towing lighter loads but struggled with heavier ones 3.

  3. Features and Technology: The GWM Ute has been noted for its competitive features, including a decent infotainment system, though it received mixed ratings (e.g., a score of 7.5 for technology in one review) 1. The Cannon-XSR variant includes additional off-road capabilities and features, such as a snorkel and upgraded tyres, which may appeal to off-road enthusiasts 10.

  4. Warranty and Reliability: GWM offers a longer warranty compared to many competitors, which could enhance buyer confidence in terms of reliability 8. However, the brand is relatively new in markets like Australia, leading to questions about long-term reliability and service support.

  5. User Reviews: User experiences and reviews vary, with some praising the value for money and features, while others express concerns about the brand's unproven track record in certain markets 56.

Analysis

When evaluating the claim regarding the quality of GWM utes, several factors must be considered:

  • Source Credibility: The reviews cited come from a mix of automotive journalism outlets and consumer review platforms. For instance, CarExpert and CarsGuide are well-regarded in the automotive community, providing detailed reviews based on expert assessments 15. However, it's essential to note that some sources may have a commercial interest in promoting certain vehicles, which could introduce bias.

  • Methodology: The reviews generally include performance testing, feature assessments, and user feedback. However, the methodology behind these evaluations is not always transparent. For example, while some reviews focus on performance metrics, others may prioritize user experience, leading to potentially conflicting conclusions about the vehicle's overall quality.

  • Conflicting Opinions: Some reviews highlight the GWM Ute's affordability and features as significant advantages, while others point out potential drawbacks, such as performance inconsistencies and concerns about long-term reliability. This divergence suggests that potential buyers should consider their specific needs and preferences when evaluating these vehicles 234.

  • Market Position: GWM's entry into the Australian market as a budget option raises questions about its long-term viability and the potential for resale value. The brand's reputation is still developing, and while initial reviews may be positive, ongoing consumer feedback will be crucial in assessing its standing in the market.

Conclusion

Verdict: Partially True

The assessment of GWM utes, particularly the Cannon-X and Cannon-XSR models, reveals a mixed picture. On one hand, they are competitively priced and offer commendable performance in certain scenarios, along with a range of features that appeal to budget-conscious buyers. On the other hand, there are notable concerns regarding performance consistency, long-term reliability, and the brand's relatively new presence in the market, which may affect buyer confidence.

The evidence suggests that while GWM utes can be a viable option for some consumers, they may not meet the expectations of all potential buyers, particularly those prioritizing proven reliability and performance under heavy loads. The variability in user reviews and expert assessments underscores the importance of individual preferences and needs in making a purchasing decision.

It is important to acknowledge the limitations of the available evidence, as many reviews are based on initial impressions and may not reflect long-term ownership experiences. Additionally, the potential for bias in some reviews should be considered.

Readers are encouraged to critically evaluate information and conduct thorough research before making any purchasing decisions regarding GWM utes or any other vehicles.

Fact Check: Paul Krugman Paul Krugman We’re All Rats Now Time to take a stand, again, against racism Paul Krugman Jun 30, 2025 Zohran Mamdani’s upset victory in New York’s Democratic primary has created panic in MAGAland. Stephen Miller, the architect of Donald Trump’s deportation policies, waxed apocalyptic: Scott Bessent, the Treasury secretary, declared that New York is about to turn into “Caracas on the Hudson.” And Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama basically declared New York’s voters subhuman, saying: These inner-city rats, they live off the federal government. And that’s one reason we’re $37 trillion in debt. And it’s time we find these rats and we send them back home, that are living off the American taxpayers that are working very hard every week to pay taxes. These reactions are vile, and they’re also dishonest. Whatever these men may claim, it’s all about bigotry. Miller isn’t concerned about the state of New York “society.” What bothers him is the idea of nonwhite people having political power. Bessent isn’t really deeply worried about Zamdani’s economic ideas. But he feels free, maybe even obliged, to slander a foreign-born Muslim with language he would never use about a white Christian politician, even if that politician were (like some of his colleagues in the Trump administration) a total crackpot. And while Tuberville stands out even within his caucus as an ignorant fool, his willingness to use dehumanizing language about millions of people shows that raw racism is rapidly becoming mainstream in American politics. Remember, during the campaign both Trump and JD Vance amplified the slanders about Haitians eating pets. And now that they’re in office, you can see the resurgence of raw racism all across Trump administration policies, large and small. You can see it, for example, in the cuts at the National Institutes of Health, which are so tilted against racial minorities that a federal judge — one appointed by Ronald Reagan! — declared I’ve never seen a record where racial discrimination was so palpable. I’ve sat on this bench now for 40 years. I’ve never seen government racial discrimination like this. You can see it in the renaming of military bases after Confederate generals — that is, traitors who fought for slavery. You can even see it in a change in the military’s shaving policy that is clearly custom-designed to drive Black men — who account for around a quarter of the Army’s new recruits — out of the service. So racism and bigotry are back, big time. Who’s safe? Nobody. Are you a legal immigrant? Well, the Supreme Court just allowed Trump to summarily strip half a million U.S. residents of that status, and only a fool would imagine that this is the end of the story. Anyway, when masked men who claim to be ICE agents but refuse to show identification are grabbing people off the streets because they think those people look illegal, does legal status even matter? Does it even matter if you’re a U.S. citizen? And the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is set to massively increase ICE’s funding — basically setting up a huge national secret police force. Now, maybe you imagine that you yourself won’t suffer from this new reign of bigotry and imagine that everyone you care about is similarly safe. But if that’s what you think, you’re likely to face a rude awakening. I personally don’t have any illusions of safety. Yes, I’m a native-born white citizen. But my wife and her family are Black, and some of my friends and relatives are foreign-born U.S. citizens. Furthermore, I’m Jewish, and anyone who knows their history realizes that whenever right-wing bigotry is on the ascendant, we’re always next in line. Are there really people out there naïve enough to believe MAGA’s claims to be against antisemitism, who can’t see the transparent cynicism and dishonesty? The fact is that the Trump administration already contains a number of figures with strong ties to antisemitic extremists. The Great Replacement Theory, which has de facto become part of MAGA’s ideology, doesn’t just say that there’s a conspiracy to replace whites with people of color; it says that it’s a Jewish conspiracy. So I’m definitely scared of what the many antisemites inside or with close ties to the Trump administration may eventually do. And no, I’m not frightened at all by the prospect that New York may soon have a somewhat leftist Muslim mayor. Anyway, my personal fears are beside the point. Everyone who cares about keeping America America needs to take a stand against the resurgence of bigotry. Because the truth is that we’re all rats now.
