Are CGC Cases UV Protected?

Introduction

The claim in question is whether CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) cases, which are commonly used for grading and preserving comic books, provide protection against ultraviolet (UV) light. This is a significant concern for collectors, as UV exposure can lead to fading and deterioration of comic book covers and pages. Various discussions and sources have emerged regarding the UV protection capabilities of CGC cases, prompting a closer examination of the evidence.

What We Know

  1. CGC Case Composition: According to a blog post from The Collectors Resource, CGC cases are made from materials such as PETG and SAN, which do not contain added UV inhibitors. Therefore, these cases do not inherently protect against UV rays that could damage the contents inside 4.

  2. Community Insights: Discussions on CGC comic book collector forums indicate a consensus that CGC cases lack built-in UV protection. For instance, one user suggested that collectors should keep their books out of direct sunlight and utilize display cases with UV protection instead 23.

  3. Alternative Products: There are products available on the market that claim to offer UV protection for CGC slabs. For example, Zoloworld offers a protective case specifically designed for CGC slabs that features UV protection tested to reduce the effects of indoor fluorescent lighting 56.

  4. General Recommendations: Collectors are advised to take additional measures to protect their comics from UV exposure, such as using UV-filtering display cases or keeping the comics stored away from light sources 23.

Analysis

The evidence surrounding the UV protection capabilities of CGC cases largely comes from community discussions and a few product descriptions.

  • Source Reliability: The primary sources of information regarding CGC cases' UV protection are user-generated content on collector forums 123 and articles from niche blogs 4. While these sources provide anecdotal evidence and community consensus, they lack rigorous scientific backing or direct statements from CGC itself, which raises questions about their reliability.

  • Potential Bias: The forums may reflect a bias towards personal experiences and opinions rather than objective facts. Additionally, product descriptions from companies selling UV-protective cases may have a vested interest in promoting their products, which could skew the information presented 56.

  • Methodology Concerns: The discussions do not provide empirical data or studies that quantify the level of UV protection (if any) offered by CGC cases. The absence of scientific testing or verification makes it difficult to ascertain the validity of the claims made by both community members and product manufacturers.

  • Conflicting Information: While the consensus appears to be that CGC cases do not offer UV protection, the existence of alternative products claiming to provide such protection suggests that there is a market demand for UV protection in comic book preservation. This indicates a potential gap in the offerings of CGC cases themselves.

Conclusion

Verdict: False

The claim that CGC cases provide UV protection is false. Evidence indicates that CGC cases are made from materials that do not include UV inhibitors, and community consensus supports the notion that these cases do not protect against UV light. Collectors are advised to take additional precautions, such as using UV-filtering display cases, to safeguard their comics from potential damage.

It is important to note that while the evidence points to the lack of UV protection in CGC cases, the information primarily derives from anecdotal sources and community discussions rather than empirical studies or direct statements from CGC. This limitation means that while the current consensus is that CGC cases do not offer UV protection, further scientific investigation could provide more definitive answers.

Readers are encouraged to critically evaluate information and consider multiple sources when assessing claims related to comic book preservation and UV protection.

Fact Check: I can promise you that NWS was NOT eradicated in 1966. I was a teen in the 1970s living/working on a ranch in far west Texas. The ranch had 2000 sheep at one time. We had many many cases of screw worm infestations. I became an expert open pasture roper during the summers. We roped the sheep and applied medicine (white king? then purple stuffin later years). I carried 2 ropes on my saddle and they smelled like a corpse. So much for facts.
